CBC Update 5.16.12
Dear CBC Family,

If there is one thing that seems to be the dominant topic of the day it is the discussions and protests over perceived “rights.” There are individuals and organizations that are committed solely to defending the rights of people, the environment, and even animals. It is very interesting that some people, while making demands for their rights, often infringe on the rights of others. You can hardly turn on the television without seeing scenes of some crowd of people “demanding” their rights. Just last night I saw a group that was protesting for the “rights” of whales and everything was fine until they came in contact with another group who stood for the rights of other people who eat whales. The ensuing fireworks were quite spectacular. This is the spirit of the age. Somehow or another, if you have a right you have to demand it without any consideration of others. Does the existence of a right make it necessary that someone demand that he be given that right? In some cases it simply comes down to whose right is actually a right.

The questions over rights are deeply emotional as they touch the core of what each human being perceives himself to be. While some rights are God-given, others are simply creations of men and their fallen nature. Some of these are very serious while others are quite comical. I remember a song from the 80s called, “You Gotta Fight for Your Right to Party.” The song was written and intended as a parody of the hippie, social reform music of the 60s. While many youth in 1986 saw this song as a rallying call to action it was actually a mockery of their foolish lifestyle. The leader of the band who performed the song said, “The thing that upsets me is that we might have reinforced certain values of some people in our audience when our own values were actually totally different.” I suppose that is one of the fruits of sarcasm.

Speaking of rights, this weekend we will be looking at Paul’s living illustration of his rights as an Apostle in Chapter 9 of 1 Corinthians. We will dig into verses 1 through 18 in a study entitled, “Rights or Wrongs.” What rights do we actually have as believers? Do I have the right to demand my rights? Are there limitations on my personal liberty, because of the gospel? I am certain that there is something here for every one of us to chew on as we continue to grow together into His likeness.

This Sunday we have our Membership Class from 1:30-4:00. If you have not yet signed up it is not too late. Please call the office by tomorrow (Thursday) and we can get you included. This class is required for membership at the church. We will cover topics like the history of CBC, where we are going, what we believe and how we are structured. If you have questions this is the place to ask them. We will provide snacks and drinks for all who are attending.

We have an upcoming church-wide BBQ, VBS, and beach baptisms all in the next few months so keep checking the website for all the latest news and events. This will be a very busy and exciting summer.

Lastly, I want to thank all of you who have been so faithful in partnering with us and supporting the ministry. We covet your prayers and are so grateful that the Lord has put you here with us for such a time as this. We are looking forward to being with you and your family this weekend.
Blessings!

Pastor Scott and the entire CBC staff
