Higher Ground

Haggai 1:8 “ Go up into the mountains and bring down timber and build my house, so that I may take pleasure in it and be honored,” says the LORD.”

“I had no idea the Old Testament was so relevant for us today”! This comment came to me from a listener to the website regarding our first study in the book of Haggai. I love the Old Testament for that very reason. It is totally relevant to any who care to listen!

God’s word through the prophets under the old covenant is always powerful, clear and sometimes very intimidating. However, that same word is always full of grace and hope if we will only receive it. In my study of Haggai I am being blown away by how much it reveals about the character of God and the way He views things. It is also helping me to be more grateful for what we have in Christ. Without Him I know none of us would make it!

This weekend we will still be in chapter one as we continue to explore how the Lord used this 90 year old man to inspire His people to consider their ways, and ultimately, to amend them. We will see how the Lord called the people to “go up” into the mountains. The word picture here is simple yet very profound. The lowland is a symbol of misplaced priorities while going up the mountain represents repentance. Unfortunately, there are a lot of people are living in the low-lands today aren’t there? Thank God for the climbers, the people that are looking for higher ground. We should have no desire to stay where doubts and fears abound and dismay. Though some may dwell where these things flourish, let our constant aim be for that higher ground. Join us this weekend as we embark with the Lord to that very place…….. Higher ground!

Blessings to each one of you,

Pastor Scott and the entire CBC Staff
