The Dark Exchange - Idolatry

Rom 1:21-23 “For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened. Claiming to be wise, they became fools, and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling mortal man and birds and animals and reptiles.”

Dear CBC Family,

Are you enjoying the rain? There is something very soothing about the rain that makes it a good environment to meditate in. As a believer, the rain reminds me of God’s promise He would not destroy the earth with a flood as He did back in Genesis. I often wonder what Noah’s family felt like during the first rain post-flood. Was their faith shaken or did they rest secure in the word of the Lord?

The word of God is the only place where we can stand on any given day. The world is so full of lies and deception that without a standard everything becomes relative. Fortunately for us God has not left us to grope in the darkness. He has given us His word which is a light for days like ours. However, we must learn to interpret it correctly. If the sense of a passage of Scripture is up for grabs; if one person’s understanding is as good as another; if a text has more than one meaning and all meanings are equally justified, then why study the Bible at all? If that was the case Bible study would be useless if there were multiple truths that were all in conflict but each was somehow correct. Let me once again state the truth: there is only one correct interpretation of the word of God. There are many applications of that truth but the truth is singular.

Why mention this? Because we are in the book of Romans which is the truth of the gospel. Romans, more than any other book, clearly lays out who man is, what he has done, why he is condemned and what God has done about it, both how and why. I cannot over emphasize how important this is for each of us to lay a hold of and for it to lay a hold of us.

This weekend we will go into detail of the first dark exchange of fallen man. This exchange is the exchange of God for idolatry and the futile thinking and darkened heart that come with it. Again, if you really care about people you want to learn what their true condition is so that you can help them with God’s cure and not man’s wisdom. Join us and bring a friend who is stuck in their thinking and hardness of heart and see if God might use His truth to set them free.

Claiming to be wise, they became fools, and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling mortal man and birds and animals and reptiles.”

This Christmas Eve we are considering putting on a small play with the kids. If you, or your child, want to be involved please speak to Janet Ackelson or Sheila Veenstra this weekend. This should be a great time as we celebrate God’s indescribable gift as a family.

Blessings to you all,

Scott
