The Spirit helps in our weakness

Dear CBC Family,

Rom 8:26 “Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words.”

This is our weekend’s text and gives one of the clearest pictures of the work of the Holy Spirit in our lives. We know that Jesus ever lives to make intercession for us (Hebrews 7:25) but here we are told that the Holy Spirit intercedes for us as well. That tells me that the redeemed of God need a lot of prayer and that much of our “weaknesses” we do not see.

The biggest question I have in this passage is what exactly does the Spirit ask for when he intercedes for me? There are three answers to that question here. 1) It says the Spirit asks for things that we don't know we should ask for. V26: "We do not know what to pray for as we ought." 2) It says the Spirit asks for these things because the reason we don't know what to ask for is because of our weakness. V26: "The Spirit helps us in our weakness." 3) It says the Spirit asks for these things because they are in accord with the will of God. V27b: "The Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God."

The truth here is that when the Spirit prays for things we don't know to pray for, that rules out a lot of things. Wisdom would dictate we learn the ways of the Lord more intimately to understand some of the basic principles of the Holy Spirit’s goals I prayer. Join us this weekend as we do that very thing.

Remember to always check the website for any updates on meeting times and restrictions as things change weekly. As it sits now (Thursday 10:00AM) we will be meeting live in the front lot on Sunday at 10:00 AM.

I’m looking forward to seeing you all.
